Hello readers. Hope your weekend is off to a good start. I know this isn’t my usual type of post, but I found it interesting, especially since so many women I know get these hairstyles. Enjoy.
A recent study shows that hair styling practices such as weaves and braids may cause permanent, scaring hair loss in African American women. According to the study, weaves and braids cause traction. The traction then can result in follicle damage and bacterial infections, both common causes of hair loss.
The study focused on surveys taken by 326 African women in Cleveland. All the women were asked about the medical histories and current conditions of themselves and their families. They were also asked about how they styled their hair. The survey found that 59 percent of the women were suffering from some type of hair loss. Weaves and braids may not be the only cause of hair loss though. The survey also found that 96 percent of women who permed their hair suffered severe hair loss. It has also been found that those who used perms, hot combs, extensions, braids, and waves were more susceptible to hair loss than women who weren’t suffering from hair loss.
