If you could choose the gender of your child, which would you prefer, a boy or a girl? Sorry ladies, but most people prefer boys. According to a 2011 Gallup survey of 1, 020 Americans, 40 percent chose boy, 28 percent chose girl, and the rest would be happy either way.
Here’s the ironic part, a similar question was asked in 1941 and the preference of having a baby boy over a baby boy remain constant. In 1941, 38 percent of Americans surveyed preferred to have a boy while 24 percent preferred a girl. The rest of the people surveyed didn’t prefer one sex over the other.
Here’s the even more ironic part, this type of survey has been repeated over 8 times throughout the years and the numbers have remained constant. More people prefer boys over girls.
The preference for boys over girls was driven by gender, education, and age. 49 percent of men want sons, while only 22 percent want girls. Women didn’t show any significant preference. 31 percent prefer to have boys and 32 percent prefer to have girls. 44 percent of people with high school educations or less prefer to have boys while 25 percent prefer girls. Those with higher educations broke even with their preferences. Those who are 30 and younger want boys, but this preference declines with age.
Although the reasons behind the preference of baby boys over girls is not clear, it does reflect a worldwide attitude that boys are preferred over girls. Thanks to selective abortion, 105 boys are born to 100 girls. In 2010, 118 boys were born to every 100 girls.
What do you think? Why do people prefer to have baby boys over baby girls? Which do you prefer?
