Happy Fourth of July

Hello readers! Happy Fourth of July to all those who celebrate in the United States! Here’s kind of an editorial to get you inspired, motivated, and catch the holiday spirit. At least those are my intentions. Enjoy.

Today, July 4, marks Independence Day for Americans all around the globe. Many people will be celebrating with barbecues, booze, beaches, parties and fireworks. They’ll watch parades and sing the songs of patriotism. However, in all the festivities many people forget why they are celebrating in the first place. Independence Day is about celebrating our independence. Brave men and women fought valiantly to free us from British tyranny. More brave men and women fought to do the same in countless other wars and will continue to do so. Keep them in mind as you celebrate today.

Also keep in mind that although we are celebrating freedom and independence in the land of equality, not all men and women are free or equal. There are women and men trapped in abusive relationships. There are men and women who have been sexually assaulted and are not yet healed. There are gay men and women who are being shunned because of their sexuality. Native Americans are confined to reservations. Innocent men and women or those who did what they needed to in order to survive are in prison. African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans are still struggling with racism. All Muslim Americans are stigmatized as terrorists. Women still are not equal to men. In one way or another we are all  enslaved mentally or physically.

With that in mind, I encourage you all to fight for your own personal independence (legally of course and within reason). Get out of an abusive or unhealthy relationship. Throw out that carton of cigarettes. Tell someone how you much you love them, even how much you hate them. Quit your crappy job. Seek counseling. Don’t allow yourself to be a victim. Don’t buy into stereotypes and don’t convey yourself as one. Freedom is about more than being able to come and go as you please. It’s a state of mind.

With all that being said, enjoy your holiday! Have fun and be safe!
