Former first lady Betty Ford (wife of Gerald Ford who died in 2006) passed away Friday. She was 93 years old. She died at a hospital near the famed Betty Ford Center with her family by her bedside.
Mrs Ford leaves behind an incredible legacy. She survived breast cancer, a mastectomy and battled with drug and alcohol addiction. Her outspokenness and candor about both issues helped remove the stigmas surrounding them. She opened the Betty Ford Center to help celebrities (and of course of the average Joe) battle addictions such as Chevy Chase, Elizabeth Taylor, Ozzy Osbourne, Lindsey Lohan, and Marlee Matlin. She also was a champion of women’s rights.
The family has arranged for Mrs.Ford to be buried next to her husband.
