After two long weeks, we finally found out who America’s next drag superstar is! Warning: this post contains spoilers so if you don’t want to know you know what to do.
The reunion started off with all the girls from season 5 doing some basic choreographed opening number and they each got a chance to walk the runway. Some looked incredible ( Detox, Alaska, and Monica Beverly Hillz) and some looked terrible (Penny Tration, Jade Jolie and Coco Montrese). Afterwards, Ru came out and sang (or lip synced) one of her new singles, “Can I get an Amen?” Yes, Ru. You can.
Each girl then got her one on one time opposite of Ru to discuss their time on the show and answer burning questions. Here are some of the highlights from their segments:
- When asked how someone can be trans and a drag queen, Monica Beverly Hillz explained that trans is who she is and drag is what she does. Ru then went on to tell the audience and viewers that the show doesn’t care about what gender contestants identify themselves.
- Lineysha Sparx STILL doesn’t know who Diana Ross is.
- Ru FINALLY reveals why she announces Ivy Winter’s name in such a goofy way. Latoya Jackson helps explain and we get hear a clip from their new single. Ivy was also named Miss Congeniality.
- Alyssa and Coco finally squashed their beef. They appear to be friends again now.
- Coco admits that she did look like a Dorito. She even bought a “Coritos” clutch along with her. It seems like she finally figured out how to do her makeup though.
There were other great moments as well before we found out who won the crown.
Santino and Alyssa: Remember when Santino said Alyssa wore the worst dress in drag race history? Well after reviewing several awful dresses from previous seasons, Santino STILL thinks Alyssa had the worse. After some light-hearted bickering back and forth between Santino and Alyssa, Ru tells the two she senses sexual tension between them and they should fuck. It was hysterical.
Detox calls out the judges: During her one on one Detox calls out the judges for judging some of the more experience queens harder than some of the queens who were newer to drag.
Sharon Needles and Alaska: It’s clear that these two really love and support each other. They were both glowing when they talked about each other. They don’t see each other as competition or one being better than the other. They see each other as equals and that’s really beautiful. Love in its purest form.
The Pit Crew: The Pit Crew was flawless as ALWAYS and got to shake a little something for us to Ru’s song “Peanut butter”. Why doesn’t this happen more often? Reality TV DEFINITELY needs some more of that.
Former contestant cameos: It was great seeing all the former queens out in the audience or up on the stage. Willam, Latrice Royale, Manila Luzon, Tyra Sanchez, Raja, Chad Michaels, Pandora Boxx, Sharon Needles and several other queens made appearances.
Despite all these great moments, it was really all about the final three Alaska, Roxxxy, and Jinkx. During their interview Alaska talked about her and Sharon. Jinkx talked about her mother and how she would use winning to help the gay rights movement. Roxxxy apologized for being a bully to Jinkx during the competition and about her late drag mother who passed away during airing.
Ultimately, it was Jinkx Monsoon who walked away with the title of being America’s next drag superstar. Despite the many challenges she faced, Jinx remained sweet and humble throughout the competition. She is smart, kind, compassionate, funny and a great actor. She worked hard to win and deserved it.
I’m still a little disappointed that Alaska didn’t win (I think she finished the strongest and grew the most this season) but I know she will go on to do great things. I’m sure some of the other girls will too.
