Yesterday, the George Zimmerman murder trial began at the Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford, Florida.
For those of you unfamiliar with the story, 28-year-old George Zimmerman is standing trial for second degree murder after shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Yesterday primarily focused on jury selection. The first group of 100 potential jurors filled out questionnaires. Only a handful were interviewed by the end of the day. It is estimated that jury selection will take a week, but it may take longer. Zimmerman was present during the proceedings.
In addition to beginning jury selection, Judge Nelson denied the defense’s request to delay the trial because they still need more time to prepare. Nelson still has to decide whether voice recognition experts will be allowed to testify in regards to the 911 tape recorded during the confrontation between Zimmerman and Martin.
The Martin family and George Zimmerman’s brother, Robert, also made statements.
